How many Seeds for this Diamond Ring...?
Weights and measures were among the earliest tools invented by man. Primitive societies needed basic measures for many tasks: constructing buildings of an appropriate size and shape, making clothing, or trading for food or other materials.
When ways to "weigh" things were invented, stones and seeds were used as standards. Plant seeds were used to compare the holding capacity of early pots, gourds, and other vessels. Volume was calculated by counting the number of seeds it took to fill a particular space. For instance, precious stones were weighed using carob seeds, which became the basis for the modern carat.
